Niroj’s practice is an obsessive engagement with materials designated as waste and refuse, exploring their transformative, ephemeral, and expressive qualities. Scrounged from landfills, the streets, old shops, and donations from friends, family, and strangers, these materials carry layered histories. His five-year stint (2013–2018) as a night supervisor at the MCD Solid Waste Management Department in Delhi provided an intimate vantage point: garbage and waste as a lens to read the city. This role allowed him to travel extensively, documenting what he saw and heard while absorbing the minutiae of the urban environment. The spectre of the landfill—or *dhalav*—is central to his practice. Through his work in waste management, Satpathy became familiar with the intensity of these sites: stupefying landscapes of unimaginable scales. Driven by energy and curiosity, he spent years looking, searching, collecting, and listening to the hum of consumption as it endlessly spun around him.
